Adaptor charger used for nuvi 200

#1 Post by coffeebingo » Thu Sep 06, 2007 10:47 am

Hi,

I have a motorola handphone charger. The connector to my nuvi 200 GPS looks the same. If I were to use this handphone charger to charge my GPS, will it burn my nuvi 200? Cos I can't get much information from the manual.

Some background: The GPS was new so it so is not wired to my vehicle yet. Why I need to charge from home is because it will need some time to charge up after I start my vehicle.

Waiting for advise...

Bro CoffeeBingo,

Check to see if the power output of the charger is compatible to that
of Nuvi. I know the dopod one can be used.

Thanks Bart,

I can't find the power rating on nuvi 200. I have checked the casing and the manual. Perhaps need to google :)

Regards,
bingo

actually any mini USB charger also can use, as long as is "mini USB". Cause mini USB or USB ouput is only 5 volt. Very standard one. Or you can charge it by ur computer or laptop, just using a USB to mini USB cable n plug it in.

Dear Bro Anthonyvoo,

Cannot charge using CPU USB cables. The Nuvi200 can only transfer data to cpu but
not enough power to charge it. Refer Keywest and me trying to charge it at Gogomotive.

Generally, if your phone (any phone with a mini-USB) can be connected to a Laptop's USB port, it also mean its mini-USB port can be used to charge with any charger that has a mini-USB connector.

In general, most of these can also be charged via your laptop, unless it needs a lot of current (like the Nuvi 600 series). I am kind of surprised to see the Nuvi 200 needing so much current. I will go check it out as my friend owns a Nuvi 200.

My experience charging in the car is as follows. I have a siimple 12V to USB converter in my car. I use a normal USB to mini-USB to charge most of my devices. Eg. Phone, GPS, etc. However, this adaptor (made in China) is rated at 400mA (so it says). It doesn't charge my O2 phone or my niece's Dopod 838pro. The original charging cable is rated higher than 400mA. That is the reason. Hence, I now use the original charging cable to charge everything that has a mini-USB socket.

I am still praying that nothing will happen. So far so good.

if you use a genuine garmin charger then you dont need to do anything. However if you use a motorola charger or any other usb charger, then you need to put your nuvi in charge mode.

to put your nuvi in charge mode, do the following :

1. Switch off your nuvi.
2. Plug in your usb charger
3. Switch on and wait for the welcome sceen
4. As soon as the welcome screen come on, unplug the usb charger and wait one second
5. Plug the charger back in.
It should charge your nuvi after that.

another method.

1. Plug in you usb charger
2. Switch off you nuvi
your nuvi should now be in charging mode but will be off.

haha... dont worry lah... all the USB voltage rating is 5 Volt. So any USB also can charge. It is the matter of slow or fast charge only.
Just like Garmin genuine charger is 1000mA (1A) - faster,
3rd party charger which is 400mA (0.4A) - slower,
computer or laptop USB - slower.
ur nuvi will not burn. ~~ Just Try It ~~
