RM2.00 kind of steep though. If you buy a roll could be cheaper. Do you get from local distributor or you // import?

Sorry just curious to know.

Cheers.

wait, in your first picture you have a fixed garmin mount with two GPS on it (and your third GPS up against windscreen) ... why do you need to have two GPS mounted??

Re: Politics of GPS Pricing

#15 Post by michelde » Wed May 06, 2009 10:23 pm

Hi to everybody

In my opinion Garmin is making big money selling GPS with MSM maps.
The price in Asia is close todouble compare to European price.
I recently bought a 765T and got the taxes refund at the airport. So I paid 280€ for a device with Europe maps (80€) and TMC (70€) if you take that off the price you can understand what I mean.
In Pavillion (KL) the Nuvi 760 cost 2500 Rm (1€=4,72Rm) without additionnal map and Traffic info.
That's a big difference.
Why???
In Europe and the USA Garmin has to compete with other brands (Tomtom, Navigon...) and maps are exactly the same, coming from Navtec or TeleAtlas.
In Malaysia MSM maps are much better than Navtec or TeleAtlas and Garmin as nobody to compete with as they secure the position with the best maps.
Maybe I'm thinking wrong. Just tell me.

Maybe MSM active members coud be entitled with a discount price from Garmin don't you think so?
Am I wrong again?
I'd like to know your opinion.

Apart from pricing strategy - there is also excise duties to factor in. It should be duty free in Singapore but I don't believe so in Malaysia.

Car manufacturers are guilty of this too like price dumping in certain markets. For example, all things remaining equal, putting aside the excise duties, you can never find a same spec Merc / BMW at the same price at 2 different markets / regions.

Definitely there is still room for Garmin prices to go further down here. Rm2500 for 760 is IMO price gouging by the Pavillion shop to unsuspecting buyers who havent done their homework. Ditto for another shop in KL that I know of. Some shops gouge prices like no tomorrow when they believe there is an affluent clientele in the neighbourhood. Its really caveat emptor.
Malsingmaps is now an official partner of Garmin to produce maps for MY, SG & Brunei.

The one on the left is a pda phone mount, middle garmin mount for my stock tracking machine and the one on the right is my RM2 or 2 ringgit emergency mount. I have used that RM2 mount for a PND Navigator too.

Why so many? I was just doing a Test to compare the track accuracy between the 60CS, 76CSx and the etrex Vista.

Bern, What's missing is the portable mount to dry your socks on the dashboard.

The new Garmin friction mount which replaces the older "bean bag". Wonder if it is already in the market. Anyone? :-k
