Another option is to consider Rental cars with built in GPS. :-k

Yes, that may be a better option, especially for countries where the free maps are not comprehensive, and the commercial maps are expensive. So renting may be the value for money option.

However, I understand those gwprojects.org NZ Open GPS Maps are as good or better than NZ commercial GPS maps. The community building their maps there are getting as big as us, and they have the added advantage of comprehensive public domain roads vector data to base their maps on. Their community don't have to worry about tracking new roads, almost all the roads are already in their maps. So they concentrate on POIs, road speed limits, and routing updating. Have a peek at their forum http://www.gwprojects.org/forum/ . \:D/

Hi

I'm one of the mappers from NZ Open GPS projects.

Rental cars with GPS isn't very widespread here yet - unlike Australia or USA etc - you may be lucky to find a company with one - try the bigger ones.

There is a commercial Garmin CN for NZ although some of our users have reported that a lot of the POIs are out of date by several years. We have a growing number of commercial POIs totalling 37,000 at the moment - I think that we have slightly more detail than Malsingmaps on the individual POI listing including tel no, opening hrs, type of business or products sold etc (as long as it fits - some items unfortunately gets truncated). There are a further 48,000 geographical type POIs.

Our street maps are likely to be more up to date than other sources in the major cities where we have users reporting changes etc. New highways and roads gets updated almost the same day as it opens in some cases.

Have a look at this page first to find where to download maps

http://gwprojects.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=65

However, these maps don't fully work with newer streetpilots and Nuvis, there is a workaround whereby you'll also need to download additional set(s) of map(s) for street searching.

Have a look at this thread for two links directing you to download additional maps if applicable.

Enjoy your trip and please remember to also have a quick look at this ...

NZ is not as urban as many towns in Malaysia. A paper map (dare I suggest it) is sufficient for traveling around both North and South Island. The only places you might need the GPS would be Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch (and maybe Queenstown). Even then, the cities are small, and traffic is light.

Did not have any problems during my driving holidays last year, with just a book touring map of NZ. Most tourist locations are very well signposted, and restaurants, supermarkets etc are easy to find.

Just got to be careful of single lane bridges (lots of them) around the countryside.

Tomtom 7 does have a full map of NZ, but that is a different program...
