Request for POI availability on its own

#1 Post by rling » Wed May 21, 2008 9:54 am

Just a request for moderators and councilors.

Is it possible to get the POI on its own?

Updates to maps and POIs here are far superior to those available for other programs or commercial versions.

In my case, I like iGo8. However, its POI is woeful. I have imported the POI from iGo2006, but it still leaves a lot to be desired.

Could the POI be made available as a separate download, with the same requirements for contributions?

This would be the mappers call. However, with their currently workload, I don't see our mapper immediately creating such POIs only download. :-#

In the long term I do see our mappers or valued contributors creating a POI uploads/downloads website to address POI updating as well as requirements similar to yours for downloading some specific POIs in GDB and CSV format. This could be something similar to http://www.zenbu.co.nz/ that supports NZ's GPS site similar to ours.

Sigh. Will wait patiently (not all that optimistic) for the mappers then!

On second thought, any means of extracting the POIs from the current maps - saw a few reference to it in the old forum, but unable to follow the trail due to broken links etc?

Bro rling, Garmin Mapsource allows you to save POIs of various file types.

Huh? Didn't know that was an option. Will have a go at it! \:D/

Edit - Can't locate the export/save POI. Seems to have options for maps, tracks and waypoints. Any help? Will be reading the manual tonight!

Figured that out. As Mapsource will permit 200 POI at a time, will have to it in batches! Got to burn some candles the next few nights!

Edit: Not a viable option. Waypoints can be easily found, but each and every one needs to be clicked to be converted to a waypoint, and then exported. Will die of Repetitive Strain Injury before too long....!
