Launch of Garmin / MSM Webmap

#1 Post by adilothman » Thu Jun 10, 2010 11:36 am

Hi all,

If you visited the http://www.garmin.com.sg website today, you would realise that the link to the webmap has been announced. Or you can go directly to the link at http://garmaps.appspot.com/malsing_index.

So a mini-FAQ is in order! Version 1.01

You can login via MSM login credentials or use your MyGarmin account. Either works fine. Just make sure you use a valid email addy, as you will receive email notifications as your contribution progresses through the mapping chain.

Webmap
You can do a number of things with it - most are self-explanatory from the interface
1. POIs - add, correct, add details, move etc. You can even use this function to add SG postal code which are not in the map yet.
2. Roads - add add, correct, add details, move, etc.
3. Area - mark an area. If you live in an area which does not have coverage? Mark it here! We will definitely prioritise areas which are not mapped yet.
4. Address : if you want accurate housenumbering along your road, use this function and mark it. Or you can use it to add other addresses.
5. File uploads : you can upload gdb, gpx, jpegs up to a limit of 1MB. Could be junction view near your house which you feel should be covered. Could be pics of POIs within your neighbourhood. You can be as creative as you want in contributing files.

Search Function
Q: Why are some of my POI searches and road searches do not work?
A: The Garmin GPS / PND uses a different algorithm to do searches so what you can find on the PND, may not necessarily be found on the webmap. For roadname search, again a limitation on the need to key in house numbering limits the functions of this search. These all are part of a future fix.

The purpose of the webmap is more for error reporting and map improvements and not as an all purpose webmap search for the public.

You can search for SG postal codes directly by keying in the postal code in the search box.

Who will process the contributions?
Our mappers will!

Will we see more frequent NT releases?
Will night turn to day?

What will happen to forum based contributions?
Contributors can choose either.

What will the most active contributor get?
A free Nuvi 1250 anyone?

Cheers!

Yes I am using IE. I will try with fire fox now.

Tried firefox, still the same. When I click on "Fix error" it only show a link asking me to log in.
