Hiking Up Broga Hill and Puncak Tok Wan

Broga Hill - Puncak Tok Wan Hike Guide

Bernard Sia (Sabah mapper), Epultone (Limbang mapper), myself and our band of bandits went up this hike last weekend : partly to enjoy the outdoors and partly to clean up some of the mountain of mess left behind by irresponsible hikers.

Length: 5.5kms, Elevation : 680m, Average ascent grade : 7.2%. Fit hikers can complete the climb in 3 hours flat. Descending can be completed in shade under 2 hours. Armchair hikers should add an additional 80 minutes either way for a more easy going hike. If you start at 600 am and have lunch at Tok Wan, you should be able to get back to the carpark by 2-3 pm.

GPS equipment : 62S, 60CSx, 78S and Oregon 300
The 62S had its first loss of signal - we broke off from the main trail and went down into a deep gully, hemmed in by huge rock boulders. Intermittent signal loss. So there we some severe drifting in the ensuing tracklogs. The 78S remained locked on through out. Interesting factoid that I will share with Garmin engineers and compare all 4 tracklogs.

The hike itself
This is a worthy hike that is close to KL. Reasonably fit folks will have no problems with this hike. After the first push up Broga Hill, the trek to Tok Wan will pass through 3 valleys. For the less fit crowd, this can be slightly demoralising as what goes down must go up again :). You will hike through some majestic canopies stretching hundreds of feet tall and this place is teeming with wildlife - including a thriving gibbons population.

Some slopes are steep and some scrambling over large boulders are required but nothing fancy. You should come fully equipped with food and water - nothing less than 3litres to sufficiently hydrate you throughout the in and out hike. A walking stick is highly recommended if you have access to one.

We have produced a very detailed map of the hike including major obstacles and hazards - it is a rainforest after all so don't expect shopping mall safety! There is a wasp hazard before the second valley - there were 2 hikers that were bitten that day. Packing anti-histamine in your first aid kit would not be a bad idea.

Last but not least. Remember the "Trash In Trash Out" principle. Bring out your own rubbish, And if you are so minded, help bring out trash left by others if you have capacity to carry them.
