harlo... i own a Garmin 255W.. I am just a noob user and would like to be a little bit more advance. previous all i did was download and update from garmin website what ever update they have without know what it does.
so i read this forum a little bit and can i summarise the following?
my 255w consist of 2 part, the software and the map.
Software is like Windows in my GPS. The where to, the navigation, the navigation voice.
Map. Got 2 pre installed map. Malsing Map and City Navi (before reading this forum i thought City Navi is the navigator voice, then i realise i was wrong) and i went to update both malsing and City Navi...
So what i need to do is update the software to the latest version and i can go all over the world but all i have to worry about is where to get the map. Right?
is my understanding correct?

Yes, for other regions you have to install the maps into your GPS unit. Can be either from Garmin website/agents of third party maps. If you read the forum more you will find links to free maps for Thailand, Australia, etc.So what i need to do is update the software to the latest version and i can go all over the world but all i have to worry about is where to get the map. Right?
is my understanding correct?
Cheers

dear sir, mine is garmin 255W gps.
trying to install latest map for first time and have some enquiries below.
1) will install the latest map in SD memory card causes slower loading/running time compared to install map in main unit?
2) i found under main unit garmin folder has *.sum and *.img (4 files each). do i remove them when I copy gmapsupp.img?
I understand instruction is to zip them, but do i need to remove it for *.sum and *.img ?
3) if I wish to remove old version map, what should I do?
4) if i wish to remove city navigator , what should I do?
thanks.

Upon boot up valid maps load to memory and runs from there

"sum" files are error checking files when Garmin per-load maps into units. "Img" files are Garmin map files. if you update a same map to a higher version, then logically you have to override or remove the old map![]()
3) if I wish to remove old version map, what should I do?
Refer to para 2 and Rule of thumb .. Backup everything including hidden files before trying anything

thanks.
Refer to para 2 and Rule of thumb .. Backup everything including hidden files before trying anything. Usually Garmin City Navigator is stored in main-memory/garmin under map file name gmapprom.img
