Saruman realised that Sauron was an unassailable foe, so rather than fight in vain, chose to join him.

Money is a necessary evil, but by its very virtue, evil. Like Precious, it tries to bend others to its will. Isildur succumbed, and Frodo nearly did. Gollum/Smeagol coveted it & perished.

Kudos to Malsingmappers for the recognition accorded by the MNC! Any good idea deserves a "yea". Just proceed with utmost caution. As the saying goes, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions". Then again, we're not in Middle Earth, are we?

One ring to rule them all
one ring to find them
one ring to bring them all
and to the darkness bind them

With sufficient funding those unresolved technical issues should end in no time. My opinion MSMembers who have contributed and qualified should at least receive almost similar updated version as commercial version and if this is made then I can't see any conflict.
Of course we will release the latest maps to you guys, our beta testers, before releasing them to our bosses who paid us :$$: \:D/

Hehe....just joking. As I've said, both version are different. I will include nothing from Malsingmaps except the mappers' map. And it won't be as updated because we do need to ensure no problem with the map.
A new beginning.....

Additional comments :-

I hope the newco and its directors do bear in mind of members welfare on any matters pertaining with the MNC and others. We don't want to be `victimised' by these giant company. Hopefully, the directors engaged a competent solicitors to handle legall matters.

My 2 cents opinion.

Cheers

why not we try to see things from different point of view... instead of "monetary contribution" we could:

1) load latest map into every new device sold

2) emphasize "malsingmaps" and the contribution-based map update practise in user manual, as well as detail steps to make contribution

3) new owners of these devices shall register their unit (GPSID, serial no., blablabla) with msm (like electrical app.) to be entitled to, lets say 2 'free' update before contribution is mandatory for future upgrade.

my two cents

I am supportive of this so long as the spirit of sharing remains (ie based on public voluntary contribution and distribution).

Just thinking far ahead.

What if something big sees this as a big business opportunity and aquire malsingmaps ? SPH buy over (like what they do with hardwarezone)? so that they can have adverts flashed all over our GPS screen? Or some regional telco buy over to value add their mobile services?

Yes, but...

a) upon winding up, please donate to charity
b) transparently posting the financials yearly

Great milestone achieved, recognition how great the maps are!!

I bought a Nuvi 200 not too long ago unaware that I could buy it without the Garmin map. I paid S$200 for the map which was way outdated compared to Malsingmaps even though it was supposed to he the latest version. Just by contributing a couple of tracks once in a while, I am blessed with such a fantastic map of Singapore and Malaysia. I believe the mappers must have worked very hard daily to come up with the updates each month. It's a yes from me but I do concur with toda_k20 about the possibility of Malsingmaps being acquired by some big shots and the original intention of the founding mappers get pushed aside.
