I jus acquired a GPS unit from Garmin etrex legend HCx and is very eager to load the singapore map and possibly Hongkong map. but upon connection to the GPS unit to the computer, i am bogged down by jargons. hopefull there is someone outthere to teach me step by step how to download the map into the unit

assume you have installed MAPSOURCE, with world basemap
download a copy of ezMS v1.02 by antyong.com, install it and run
select NEW, enter path of map, and enter name of mapset you want, and select create mapset
a command prompt pops up, and runs
select quit ezMS
run MAPSOURCE
if ok, you should find in window, two map sets to be selected,
select the mapset you named, and use tool to select the map, and you are ready to upload (see MAPSOURCE tuitorial video)

if not ok, you could have MAPSOURCE closed
that means your map is nogood,
run ezMS, and uninstall your mapset, and look for another map

your MAPSOURCE could collapse and unable to load anymore, do not panic, proceed to

and follow carefully to save MAPSOURCE

and start all over

Br chershen, here is a much easier way to do it.

Download the free Jan 2008 maps from here viewtopic.php?f=26&t=23

Run the .exe file on your lappy. It will create a GMSPSUPP.IMG file. Copy this file via Windows Explorer into the microSD card / garmin subdirectory.

For HK maps, if you have the GMAPSUPP.IMG in Garmin Format, just copy this into another microSD/garmin subdirectory.

Just my 2 cents advise, keeping maps in separate microSD cards is much easier and less problematic.

Hi everyone..

Im looking for some pointers as im facing some issue here in Japan..

I have the Garmin Mobile XT - which im using it with my Symbian mobilephone (Sony Ericsson P1) in Japan..
typical usage is for navigating around Tokyo (northern and southern Tokyo)

I recently purchase the Garmin Edge 705 GPSr to replace it.

Im currently trying to transfer all maps (MSM + Japan with street names etc) from my Mobile XT to the micro SD on the Edge 705..
Following are the files in the Mobile XT Garmin folder on the S.Ericsson P1..
1. atlantic.img
2. GarminDevice (XML Document)
3. GarminMobile XT.sis (Sis file)
4. gmapbmap.img
5. GMAPPROM.IMG
6. gmapprom.unl
7. gmapsupp.img
8. gmapsupp.unl

on the Edge 705 microSD card, i've created the Garmin folder and tranferred 6 files into it.
1. atlantic.img
2. gmapbmap.img
3. GMAPPROM.IMG
4. gmapprom.unl
5. gmapsupp.img
6. gmapsupp.unl

When i turn on the Edge 705, the message 'Can't Unlock Maps' appears.
When i tranfer only GMAPPROM.IMG and gmapprom.unl to the Edge 705 SD card, it is okay, although only the base map appears (both MSM and Japan street maps are not displayed)

Can somebody advice what i did wrong and how do i go about with this issue?

Garmin commercial maps are not transferable between devices due to copyright laws. The map images are in the gmapsupp.img file and locked to your original device.

Feel free to download our free to use Jan 08 maps from our download site. This is a executable file which will generate a gmapsupp.img which can be copied directly into the microSD/garmin subdirectory to use in your Edge705

Can I use your maps on my Garmin Quest? Also I'm thinking of getting a GPS phone, on the short list are LG910 and Sony Ericsson c905, does anyone have an opinion which way to go. Is either phone likely to be as good as my Quest (I use it mainly on my bike in Europe), but am coming over to M'sia and plan to do some cycling.

Yes you can. However, the free v2.15 map is in GMAPSUPP.IMG format (without Mapsource mapset installer), so you need to use a utility like SendMap20 or IMG2GPS (another Windows GUI for SendMap) to upload this map file to your Quest.

I'm using Etrex Vista Hcx. I download many poi & tracks but don't know how to save & display it in my GPSr.

I tried to save the files to my microSD (eg: F:\Garmin -asume F: is my microSD drive) but it won work...

Please help me...

Bro 007,

Your HCx will only read maps in the Gmapsupp.img form. To view POIs, you have to put the gpx file in
"GPX" folder and for alert files (gpi) in "POI" folder. You cannot load gdb files or 12345678.img format
files into your Garmin folder and expect to see it. First you need to load them in Mapsource then
create a gmapsupp from it. Be careful, most garmin maps incl MSM is in this file name. Don't accidentally
replace your Garmin map or MSM locked map while loading your tracks etc.

My friend is using GPSMAP60 which does not have a SD card. How to download map from SD chip to its unit.
