Map of Perth Australia

#621 Post by yhchia » Fri Dec 30, 2011 4:43 pm

Hi Seniors,

Will be visiting Perth soon and was wondering if we can download freemaps for Australia using the Nuvi 1350 bought in Singapore. Appreciate a step by step guidance on how to do it if this is possible. Thanks!

IMHO I suspect that the OSM Queensland map does not have address data so you can't search for things. You can only display the map and your position on the screen.
osm garmin map is routeable and searchable on my garmin xt. you need to send the map to your device using mapsource

Were did you put the OSM map file in your Nuvi ?
It is suggested to locate in SD card /garmin sub-folder
Map filename should be gmapsupp.img

Oh ? you mean i have to rename each country map into gmapsupp.img ?
but at any one time i can only have 1 gmapsupp.img on the garmin subfolder right ?

that means that at any one time, i can only run 1 country's map on the GPS then ?

Actually, i stored all the *.img that i downloaded into the same SD/garmin subfolder where i kept the gmapsupp.img .
but i did not rename them.
i thought the Garmin will automatically detect the various *.img and prompt me to choose which country i want to use.

thanks in adv for yr kind advise. i will go try it out again !

An alternative for you. If you want to do what you say, each country map in its country name and put all in one sub folder, then in SD card, create a /map sub-folder. Then dump all Garmin map into that folder under what ever name you want.

dumped Perth and Western Australia *.img maps from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ and http://www.osmaustralia.org/garmin.php into SD card /Map using windows explorer.

but when tried "Where To?" -> "Address" gave error "No Map Data Available",
although can go "View Map" (streets etc.) by manually scrolling over to Australia.

is there something else i must do in order to enable searching by address?

thanks in advance.

Yes, 2 things.

1. Check the map you want to search.

2. Change location to somewhere in Australia if you wish to search for an Australian address
Lean not on your own understanding
