A driving holiday to Ko Samui Island in South Thailand

#1 Post by cflai » Sun Jun 15, 2008 4:08 pm

Hi

Thought I will Share my last road trip to Ko Samui .....

2 weeks ago, we joined a group of cars from Penang/Butterworth to Ko Sanui Island, Thailand. It consisted of a convoy of 8 cars.

I attach a set of tracks to and fro Ko Samui starting and ending in Seremban ... The route was from Seremban - Hatyai, then through the Pathulung highway to Surat Thani and to the ferry point at Don Sak, crossed by ferry and landed at Samui town, stayed at Chaweng Cabana Resort for 3 nights free and easy and returned via the coastal road to Songkla/Hatyai and Malaysia.

The track was taken from a mixture of those logged on a NUVI 760 and a GPSMAP60Csx

Since it was school holidays, lots of young people which worked out well for my young son...

Ko Samui was a very nice town, very clean and beautiful beaches. Full of foreign tourists and full of entertainment places - a drive round the island to visit a tiger animal and bird show, aquarium was also included. Then to temple with a Kuan Yin temple with 18 hands. Monkey show (plucking coconuts) - Chaweng beach road with a lot of pubs and makan places and shops selling clothes etc.

Also time was spent visiting Makro, Tesco and Big C shopping centres .....

Diesel was a whopping RM4 per litre - Car I used was a Toyota Landcruiser 4,200cc diesel turbocharged manual.

A place well worth visiting and will definitely visit again.

Some photos to follow......

Thanks for the pictures.

I'm planning on doing a drive trip there sometime next year and was wondering if you can offer some advise.

- Did you take the Raja Ferry?
- What is the cost to bring the car over?
- Did you have to pre-book the ferry tickets? or can just go there and buy, then queue?
- How long was the drive to get to Donsak, say from the mayaysian border?
- What grade of petrol (if you so happened to notice) id available on the island? Don't think I can use anything below 95RON.
- Was there alot of security checks along the route since that area is prone to Muslim/Buddhist attacks?

Thanks so much for your feedback.

Hi Bro dwoon

Here are answers to your queries:

1. We took the Seatran ferry and not the Raja ferry, understand they have different jetties to board and disembark both on the Island and the mainland.

2. It cost us about RM350 per car and RM8 per passenger.

3. We did not prebook the tickets but instead arrived at the jetty and bought the tickets. The ferry frequency is 1 hr per ferry so we waited there - fortunately there was a short queue during the weekday. I understand you can prebook but it was too much of a hassle for us as we did not know if it was Raja or Seatrans .... Seatran ferry will dock at Samui town while Raja ferry will dock further down.

4. If you were to download my tracks, you will notice we started off at the Caltex station at the Phatulung Highway at Hatyai. Started at 10.30 am and ended up at the Seatran ferry jetty at 4.38pm. Took us 6 hours because we stopped 40 mins at an R&R at Thungsong for lunch, then we had a car with blown tyre and lost more than an hour looking for a tyre shop for the special low profile tyre for an Alfa car and had it replaced. Also lost about 20 mins going to the new Raja ferry jetty and were redirected to the Seatran one.

5. The Samui Island has many big petrol stations and sell the same fuel as on the main land albeit at slightly higher prices. So you should have no problems topping up in the Island. The road drive around the island is only about 60km with a little more for sight seeing, so if you were to top up on the mainland before boarding the ferry, you should have no problems having the fuel last until you get off the island after a 3 nights trip after driving all over.

6. In my opinion, the trouble spots in Thailand are around the Narathiwat/Yalla/Patani region which is on the south eastern side of the Songkla/Patani provinces. On the Sadao/Hatyai/Songkla/Highway 4 areas to Surat Thani, there are no signs of patrols/roadblocks/security measures taken by the Thai government that are noticeable. Life goes on as usual in Hatyai except that visitors are a little less during my 3 nights stay. Hotels on special offers but that was during the week days. Weekends more people.

Hope I have answered your questions

dwoon,

sorry I made a mistake on the price per car for ferry to cross - it should read RM36 per car and driver, not RM350!

1000 apologies :prayer:

Thanks for the info cflai, and good news on the Car ferry costs. I thought RM350 sounded a bit steep!

This info is very useful as I shall be driving there in July! :tq:
