Added some pictures on 31/12.
.........................................

In June school holiday, we made a trip to the east coast of peninsular Malaysia. That time, we were in a group of three families drove up in three cars. All of us enjoyed the trip very much and had planned for another trip even before we returned back.

Note: The previous trip log is here.

Thus in this year end school holiday, the same Wong, Tee and Teo families is again set out on a trip up north. This time, we go on the west coast and our destination is Cameron Highland and Port Dickson. This is a true 游山 (tour to the mountain, CH ) 玩水 (play the water, PD) trip hor.

We planned to take the Simpang Pulai way up to Cameron Highland. Beside the road condition is easier to drive, it's also more scenic and we could stopby some vegetable farms along the way. But more importantly, hee hee… its because we could stopby Ipoh to hunt for some good food there. Slurp slurp….

So here we go…

Day 1 (15/12/07)

We set out early in the morning at 6:30am going by the second link. There was moderate jam at second link in Singapore side because we met a convoy of cars from AA and Safra arriving there ahead of us. The checkpoint clearing was slow as almost all cars were full of passengers. It took us over one and half hour to clear Singapore side. Luckily, it was all cleared on Malaysia side and we were on the highway by around 8.30am.

We took a leisure drive and had a break at Pagoh R&R. Thought of taking some breakfast there, but it was terribly crowded, again because the convoy group was ahead of us. We gave up and move on to Ayer Keroh (Restoran Jejantas) for breakfast instead. It was totally different here. No crowd. We could have our breakfast free and easy.

After that, we move on straight to Ipoh. On arriving at Ipoh, we charged all the way to a shop selling salted chicken as we heard a lot that the chicken there are selling out very fast. The shop name is “Restoran Aun Kheng Lim” (N4 35.683 E101 05.006). There is no eating in as the shop only sells salted chicken, nothing else. So we grab some and “ta pao” away.

Then we move on to “Low Wong Taugeh Chicken” to have our late lunch. This is one of the most famous "Ngar Choy Kai" aka "taugeh chicken” shop around. The taugeh in Ipoh is very famous for is short, fat and crunchy feel. Overall I found it a bit salty to my taste, but not bad lah. There is another shop opposite “Low Wong” which is also selling the same “Ngar Choy Kai”. The shop name is "Onn Kee" and it’s also famous. Will try next time and see whether it is also so salty. Hope it's not.

The above mentioned shops are all nearby each others as shown.
Image
Note: If I didn't indicate coordinates such as for "Low Wong" and "Onn Kee", it means those are already in the maps.

After taken “Ngar Choy Kai”, we move on to check in at the hotel. We stay at the "Ritz Garden Hotel", which is just two minutes drive from "Low Wong". The room rate is cheap for RM110 only per night. The room is a bit small but it’s clean. So not bad for a night stay.

After a short break, we went back to the same place as "Low Wong" because behind it, there is a shop selling local foodstuff such as biscuits, Kai Chai Peng, and such. My wife and wives of the other two families were all too happy because they could buy back a lot of tidbits to give away back home. My wife is the champion, sapu two bags full of stuff and when I got to know the bill amount, I almost fainted. The name of the shop is Yee Thye Cake House & Confectionery (N4 35.666 E101 05.060).

Next, we move on to Tesco for some light shopping. You know what, we planned to have our own steamboat in Cameron Highland. We brought our steamboat cooker – no joke!! So, we grab some stuff for the steamboat mah. And of course some beers and red wines.

As we had salted chicken waiting for us back in the hotel, we just "ta pao" some extra food to go with it. It happened that we notice there is Nasi Kandar Pelita here in Tesco Ipoh (N4 37.012 E101 07.100), we “ta pao” some nasi kandar. And yes, the Nasi Kandar is good, the curry smell is superb. Shiok shiok.

Day 2 (16/12/07)

After a long drive on day one, Teo and Tee families opt to wake up late and plan to had simple breakfast in the hotel.

My wife and me beg to differ. Since we’re all the way up in Ipoh, we must try out more food. We end up in a shop famous for its curry mee (or laksa as we call it). You can find the shop is the map. The name is – “Xin Quan Fanq”. The laksa here is different, it also has extra “liu” to go with it.

Image
Look at the “liu” in the bowl on the left, it has eight layers of it. Let me count – 1. Ngar Choy (taugeh), 2. chicken intestines, 3. chicken liver, 4. Chicken meat, 5. prawn, 6. Pig head meat, 7. Char Siew, 8. Roasted pork. And a small bowl of curry gravy to go with it. Yum yum ….

After breakfast, we packed up and move on to Cameron highland via Simpang Pulai. Indeed the road to Cameron Highland is easier to drive here, and there is beautiful scenery along the way.

We go all the way until we stop at the self-pluck vegetable farm (and the name is just “Self-Pluck Vegetable Farm” in the map). It’s altitude is about 1440m. It's pretty cooling there. Can see the cloud just above our heads.
Image

Here were can pluck the vegetables ourselves.
Image

we pluck carrots..
Image

these are our result
Image

sweet corns…
Image
For our steamboat.

The lady told us that this is the first generation strawberry. They grow in wild. It has "no heart" i.e. hollow in the inside. But its quite sweet to eat.
Image

I think some kids have never touched an earthworm before.
Image

This is their first time.
Image

The kids love this place and definitely enjoyed it.

Next, we move on and stop at Kg Raja for lunch. I didn’t pre-plan which restaurant to go. Just drive and look around when we reach there. End up, we settle for “Lai Fatt Restrnt” for its convenient of parking.

We brought along vegetables that we’ve just plucked out and ask them to cook for us. The end result is – super fresh and delicious dishes.
Ya the vegee is cooked in two different styles.

Plain fried...
Image

and sambal chili...
Image

Again, it's super fresh. But, can you imagine the vegee are like this just 1 ~2 hours ago...
Image
many leaves at the outers layer are thrown away.

After lunch, we visit to Boh Tea plantation and their visitor center at Sg Palas. We make sure to make it to visit on the day we just arrive as the next day is Monday and the visitor centre is close.

The road to the tea plantation is horribly narrow.
Image

We've to stop, get down from car to access and guide cars passes through the narrowest point when both ends are having few cars trailing, making it impossible for either side to reverse and give way.
Image

Look at this mark, some cars must have had a big scratch squeezing throught here.
Image

And, finally here it is. Sg Palas Tea Plantation.
Image

There is a café hanging half way in the air…
Image

And we were sitting there enjoying our tea and coffee.

We have a late check in to the Equatorial hotel. We took up a three-room apartment like this.
Image

Our apartment is on the fourth floor, it's good, clean and spacious….

On ya, we met the same AA and Safra convoy group there. There were also staying at Equatorial.

That night we leave the kids playing in the apartment while the parents are out for steamboat dinner.

We went early for steamboat at “Golden Win Steamboat”. Its only RM13 per head.
Image

We brought self plucked vegetables for them to cook and ordered extra and “ta pao” some fried noodles and fried rice back for our kid.

There’s little problem here. As we have 6 kids and a maid, we “ta pao” three dishes, fried meehoon, fried mee, and fried rice. Three person portion each. End up they gave us three packets each of the dishes. Total of 9 packets! Each Packet is so big portion that is good for two persons to share. Ha ha, we paid RM78 only for the steamboat there but need to pay another RM60+ for the “Ta Pao”. What a miscommunication.

to be continued.......

:tq: for those pictures and a welcome trip back home for a safe journey... :good:

Steamboat is one of my likable dishes too... esp. when the "Tng" gets to be thicker from all the various meaty and vegee juices!!!

Day 3 (17/12/07)

We had roti prata (there call roti canai) at an Indian coffeeshop juts at the entrance of Equatorial. There we saw the convoy group leaving. We just hope that they don't go to Port Dickson. Otherwise, it would be too crowded there :nehneh:.

We then proceed to the morning market at Kea Farm. It's just next to Equatorial. Here, we bought some more stuff for steamboat and of course some fresh strawberries and dried fruit as well.
Image

We notice the strawberries on sales are much lesser than normal. We thought it's because of raining season.

However, the vegees there are still plenty to choose. Look at the cauliflowers...
Image
can't resist the temptation, we bought some.

Next, we visited “Raju Strawberry Farm & Café”. It’s just opposite Equatorial. Too bad we can’t self-pluck strawberry here. The lady boss told us that there isn’t much fruits because it’s not the season plus raining now. Best timing for self-plucking is between February to June.

So, just take some photos of strawberries on trees and then go.
Image

Image

The kids were a little disappointed, we try our luck at another farm, the “Kasimanis Strawberry Farm" (N4 29.397 E101 22.760). Same thing – no fruit . But they have some other plants beside strawberries for us to view
Image

We saw this bangalow infront of Kasimanis.
Image

One little girl quickly make a wish that her daddy could buy this type of house for her to stay in. Luckily not my girl... :-'

Bo bian, no chance to pluck strawberries, we head back to hotel for a break and finish up the left over noodle and fried rice we “ta pao" the night before. Luckily there is a fridge in the apartment and we’ve a steamboat cooker to heat up the food. After heat-up, it's still taste as good.

Then we brought the kids to butterfly farm.
Image

We let all the kids go in with three adults to take care of them (note: the butterfly farm is not free, entrance fee is RM5 for adults and RM2 for kids) while the rest of us waited outside. Phews, they took a solid one and half hour in there. They said it's very fun in there with a lot of butterflies,
Image

flower,
Image

flower,
Image

more flower,
Image

a lot of flowers,
Image

there is also insets,
Image

reptiles,
Image

and snakes to see.
Image

The night set in and it began to rain. Ya, it's raining season now. We quickly move back to our hotel and start our “all vegees” steamboat dinner.
Image

Not bad lah, after two days heavy on meats, we had something lighter and on top of that, some vegees are self-pluck one somemore. Furthermore, the night is extra cold due to rain, the thermometer in my car showed external temperature was just 17°C when we went out for dinner last night. How good to take steamboat on such environment  .

Day 4 (18/12/07)

We prepare to leave Cameron Highland today. So breakfast is simple – we had it at the hotel café.

By 10:30am, we’re all done, checked out and start to move down. As far as I know, there are only two petrol stations in Brinchang, so we went to Brinchang to top up our tank and descending down using the old road towards Tapah.

As it’s raining season, we came across one area with slight landside leaving a narrow one lane passable. There were also two places along the way that have trees cutting job working.
Image

One just not far below Ringlet and another one infront of Latar Iskandar Waterfall. We’ve to stop to wait for them to cut, clear the tree branches and move on. They’re doing this continuously for a long stretch of road. So, anyone going up/down along old Tapah road, please be extra careful.

As we’re facing all these tree cutting works, the journey down was slow, it took us a solid four and half hours from Cameron to Seremban where we had our lunch. We stop at a shop name “You How Fook” but it’s just mark as “Bak Kut Teh” in the map.
Image

I found this in Bro Jaguar travel log here.

If not, I wouldn’t be able to figure there is such a good bak kut teh shop around. The bak kut teh here is real good lah, especially the soup.
Image

Bro Jaguar has more detail elaboration on this bak kut teh in his log (link above). He is expert in describing food lah. Thanks bro Jaguar  .

Later, we proceed to Port Dickson where we stay at the “Avillion Village Resort”.

A very nice place indeed and we took up three unit for garden view rooms. The rooms are just beside the pools and surrounded by plenty of plants.
Image

We stay at the corner unit. It's a two storey semi-detach bungalow style with two units each on each floor.

It’s very pleasant to see so many greens around. Especially during the morning and raining time where we can hear sound of raindrops on various surfaces --roofs, tiles, wooden floors, wooden staircase, various kind of leaves, water in the pool, etc. great sounding effect.

That night, as we had very late bak kut teh as lunch, we decided to skip dinner and head straight into the karaoke room. We spent a solid 3 hours in the biggest room (that manages to squeeze in 7 adults and 6 kids) and that cost us only RM290 including drinks.
Image

We end the karaoke at around 11pm and quickly head out to “ta pao” some supper back to fill up our stomach.

to be continued....

Day 5 (19/12/07)

All wake up late as a result of late night the previous day. Quickly taken some breakfast at the resort café and the kids jump quickly into the pools after that.

They enjoyed the most the slides.
Image

We then went to enjoy steam bath and sauna till noon.
Image

Got out for lunch at “Weng Yin Seafood Village”. The food here is nice especially the deep fried “ang chou”,
Image

claypot drunken prawn,
Image

remember, we bought cauliflower from Cameron. This is it...
Image

still fresh after two days. Really crunchy =P~.

Is it we were too hungry or the food there are too good? I think both. The empty plates say it all.
Image

After lunch, we end up in the “Extreme Park”.
Image

There are few activities here but only go kart is operating. So, we go for the go kart race…hee heee..
Image

To others, we have to shout – “Don’t go so fast, slow down at the corner….”
Image

But to her, we have to shout “Go faster girl….”
Image

Ha ha, she is a very careful driver, observing all the slow-down signs, slope and bends. Also let other go first when other carts go near her. I don't have to worry next time she got her driving license… :D :D

There were many durian stalls on the road side. We stopby one and tried out some.
Image

This is "猫山王" and it cost RM15 a fruit. Taste is real good.
Image

Back to hotel, the kids visited the pets farm and found some cute animals there.
Image

Image

Then, we headed to the beach in the evening.
Image

Look at the sky, it going to rain lah
Image

We just played for a while and it really starts to rain…..

Stuck… we dig out all available tidbits, bread, beers and chat all the way into the night. Our room is near to the lounge. So, we’ve free live band music and songs to accompany us.

Same thing, until late in the night, we went out "ta pao" back suppers.

Day 6 (20/12/07)

Last day!

As we miss the beach due to rain the day before, we had early breakfast and head straight to the beach again.
Image

It was fun to play in the beach early in the morning before the burning sun rises up high.

Kids like to build sand castles.

Builder at work, see how serious he is...
Image

and his result
Image

Look at other creativities...
Image

and this
Image

Back from beach, the kids jump into the pools again.
Image

and the adults again head for the steam bath and sauna once more.

We really utilize the facilities to the last minutes before we checked out.

Checked out at noon. Fill up our tanks and had our lunch as this restaurant – “Restoran Yuan Xiang” (N2 28.367 E101 51.542).
Image

The restaurant is below a Chinese temple. This is where we came to "ta pao" the past two nights. We found the food there quite nice especially the fried rice.

After lunch, we head straight home and that ends our 游山玩水 trip.

Thank you for reading this log till the end.

Ya, we miss it. My group buddies prefer to stay and relax in the resort since it has good facilities there.

Maybe next trip will try it.

=D> :tq: CyWong, enjoyed peering at all the pics, a nice view at your family outing in Malaysia. Maybe, if you strike 4-D well & good, you'd probably consider having such a bungalow home too...who knows??  and I'm sure the children enjoyed their trip too and you for sharing your holiday snaps.... :good:
