Kuwait Ban DSLR Camera In Public - Is This True?

#1 Post by moeyHC » Thu Nov 25, 2010 3:56 pm

"According to multiple online sources, it is now illegal for amateur photographers to use their DSLR cameras in public in Kuwait. The curious regulation appears not to concern any other type of camera - so while you can’t use, say, an entry-level Digital Rebel or D3100 on the streets of the emirate; it is perfectly legal to shoot an EOS 1V or a Nikon F6, not to mention any Leica, analog or digital. Compacts and cell phones are also exempt from the ban. (Accredited journalists may carry on using their DSLRs too.)"

Source HERE and HERE.

hmm.. strange rules. how about cameras that look like DSLR but are not, & mirorless interchangeable lens cameras that performs just as good as DSLR. can the authority distinguish 'em?
ask not (just) what malsingmaps can do for you

Best is not to bring anything that "physically" resembles a DSLR and that includes "prosumer" models. You will be the loser in a debate with authorities :-'

ha haa... Singapore can only claim second place after Kuwait for strange restriction.... I thought the Bubble Gum ban is strange but they do have a 'decent' reason to do so... Let's see if someone will mount his compact onto a Telescope.... :o

Bro naim will be very happy with his Sony NEX5... ... good choice... please goto Kuwait and do a photo shoot.

I would imagine that DSLRs would have better (and more powerful) lenses and therefore is susceptible to abuse by folks with voyeuristic tendencies  I cannot think of any other reason. And HD recording?

The ban for shopping complexes (now KLCC included) is more due to security. A few years ago I was prevented from taking pics of my kids whilst in a shopping mall in Australia and boy was I peeved. Now Singapore and Malaysia have also followed suit.
Malsingmaps is now an official partner of Garmin to produce maps for MY, SG & Brunei.

In the "old" days, people take pictures and it just ends up in album. Can't reproduce without having to run to the photo shop.

This days with more and more versatile DSLR and internet, people shared photos online and some photos taken with DSLR comes with GPS coordinates.

Not that big brothers everywhere are panariod, but unfriendly folks are getting more tech savvy, and utilising the pervasive technology, available to make life better for common people, and turn it again the common folks to make life miserable for people they dislike.

So Google got whacked almost everywhere for it StreetView......Blackberry got whacked too for its secured services that big brother can't access.

Facebook got whacked too for being used to spread rumours, demostration, etc....

Anyway, anybody carrying cameras near any of the sensitive locations will be view with suspicion.

And now that unfriendly folks like to invite happy people to be unhappy like them, crowded places are being abused as well...

My take on the DSLR.....

Poser: Can we ever go back to the Neolithic Age....most unlikely. But some folks are convinced we can. Nuts!
