I wld like to volunteer

#1 Post by cindy_b » Mon Jul 20, 2009 4:45 pm

Hi, I have been lurking this forum. I am excited to know you are adding house number to your maps. Since I am an avid user of the GPS unit, I would like to help. How can I go about it?

Hi

:welcome: to MSM.

You dont have to be a programmer / mapper to be a volunteer - u need just a keen eye and a bit of passion.

Everything is about taking small steps .. so you can start by sharing data the house numberings found on your street. :wink:

The simplest description the better - the simplest format i can think of is :

Name of road, starting house numbers on the left and starting house numbers on the right and the end numbers at the end. Maybe prefix with the road that you came from.

So it should look like this :

Jalan Imaginary A -> Jalan Imaginary B L2# R1# -> L36# R43#.

Cheers!

Hi Bro Adil,

I am a bit confused by your equation and I think a newbie would be too. Can I offer a suggestion as:

Jalan Imaginary A -> direction x>y (e.g. N>S or W>E etc.) -> L2# R1# -> L36# R43#.

Agree to some extent .. but rather than N/E/S/W, i think identifying the originating road or the subsequent connecting road would give the mapper the right orientation on the numbering sequence.

So apart from Cindy, who else wants their house numbers added to the map? :wink:

You are right but you missed my point.

In your equation:

Jalan Imaginary A -> Jalan Imaginary B L2# R1# -> L36# R43#.

The question I have in my mind is which road are you numbering? A or B?

But if you name only one road then that doubt is removed. Instead of N,S, E or W, you of course can mention the starting intersection and the ending intersection to give the direction but wouldn't that be even more cumbersome or wordy?

Yep .. potentially wordy. Unless contributors have access to Mapsource .. but its a start! :thumbsup:

Bro,

I would like to contribute too. The good (or bad) thing is the place that I live is already mapped. After reading what you guys do in The Star last week, I found a taman that has been mapped, but the name of the road isnt named yet. How can I contribute?

Just a curiousity - if someone send the wrong name, how would you guys find out? Lorong Stimix, for example...

Thanks.

The Lorong Stimix example is an example where such a road does not exist. In mapping fraternity, its known as an "easter egg". :wink:
