Golf Kaki's : Golf Maps for Garmin Approach

#1 Post by adilothman » Thu Oct 01, 2009 2:59 pm

We have received the specs for official Garmin golf maps and are now doing early trial work for Garmin Approach https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=261&pID=31070

So for golf kaki's out there - there are plenty of ways you can help get this project as essentially all we need is information. So if you are golfing today or tomorrow, and would like to have detailed golf maps at your fingertips, this would be the start of a new beginning ..

A lot of people have written and said that they are not so forum savvy - so just email me at adil.othman@gmail.com - or use this forum - or use the PM system to see how you want to contribute to the golf maps.

If you dont have Maspource and do not want to dabble with all the techy details - right after your golf thing - just browse your GPX folder and email in raw your current.gpx. As simple as that.

The work we do for the golf maps will be incorporated into the MSM NT maps but it may not have the additional bells & whistles of the Approach for all the golfing features. There are additional fields of data which our ordinary GPS cannot take advantage of. But all is not lost since you will still have a detailed visual golf map on your Garmin GPS. Just use a pen and paper to calculate your score

If you are "Mr. All I have is just information" - you can still help out on info such as :

o course name, phone #, address

o number of holes

o par value for each hole (can be optional, the unit will compute a default)

o course city and state (to support searching)

o membership type (public, private, semi-private, resort, military, other)

o course designer

o year designed

o course type (regulation, executive, par 3)

o type of fairway grass

o type of greens grass

o tee slope/ratings

If you are have a gps with you when golfing - then read this :

If you're using Nuvi, toggle off all your installed maps - this is to prevent the unit from locking onto nearby roads - and record the listed below.

If you're using handheld gps - just turn off Lock On Road.

Info that you can contribute:

o record your golf cart trails as you move along

o mark as waypoint the teebox

o mark as waypoint the hole

o mark as waypoint gazebos or other furnitures or items of interest

We will tackle all the other nitty gritty details.

Cheers!

Adil,

I'm a golf addict and I would like to do my part to contribute to this project.

1) I don't have a Nuvi or other handheld Garmins. I use GMXT on my PPC. Is that acceptable?

2) A lot of courses allow buggies to go off-tracks, i.e. onto the fairways. This would mean that if we record the buggy trail, it will be a mix of buggy-tracks and fairways. Isn't that a problem?

3) Position of pins/holes on the greens change every week; is it relevant to record these as waypoints?

Adil,
This is interesting and I will submit tracks for Rahman Putra GC. I'm a weekend golfer so could take about a mth to complete recording. I'm only regular on the lake course but will track the hill course later. Tee box waypoints should be on the blue stone marker and greens (hole waypoint) should be at the middle of the green.

Cheers

Yes, that's correct and I agree too. Garmin approach will give you distance from current position to Green, so it can be white, blue, black or gold. No problem.

We have to keep this consistent as some golf course will show distance to pin differently for "Par 3" hole. i.e. front of green. But for MSM, I would proposed that we keep to center of the green for all holes.

Cheers, Kelvin.

I agree with both of you. However it would be prudent to know what Garmin's standards are for these items before we start.

The pin spot changes all the time and Garmin Approach allows you to manually change it. We are meeting Garmin GIS engineers next week and hope to get more clarification.

But do get cracking! So long as we have the raw information, we would be able to customise / change it accordingly.

To avoid duplication, I undertake to map both courses for Pulai Spring Golf and Country Club in JB (Malana and Pulai courses)

Laguna National GCC - Masters Course

#10 Post by jchoong » Mon Oct 12, 2009 12:02 pm

Adil,

Using my PDA running on GMXT, I did the Laguna National GCC Masters Course in Singapore. This is my first attempt, so would need some direction and assistance.

Attached are the following:

1) Laguna Masters Tracks
This is the trail of the buggy track that I did for the 18 holes. I took one pass thru the buggy track without making a stop.

2) Laguna Masters Waypoints
These are the positions for the Teeboxes (Blue - prefixed as T..) and Pin Holes (Centre of greens - prefixed as H..) for holes #1 to #18. The halfway house is also indicated.

3) Laguna Masters Details
Address, course/slope rating, etc.

Let me know if you need any additional information. Please note I did the Waypoints and the Tracks separately. This is to ensure the track trail is clear and uncluttered. I have to add that it would be quite difficult if one were to do the tracks and waypoints while playing a round of golf as it would sure to upset your golfing kakis.

(Edit1: Adil, I could not attach the text file, so will PM you this item. You can tell this stuff is new to me! Edit2: The course details are shown below)
