What next after Garmin Vista Cx?

#401 Post by alanchia67 » Sat Nov 01, 2008 10:35 pm

Have enjoyed my Garmin since purchase many years back. Has been useful for quick POI capturing, tracking, trekking, and also car navigation.

Am thinking of getting a new GPS to replace this.

I dont see any Garmin GPS which has A-GPS function. Am thinking, does A-GPS require SIM card to function? Perhaps this is the reason there's no GPSr with A-GPS unless it's a PDA Phone with built-in GPS. Is my assumption correct?

For long tunnel (such as KPE in Singapore), it would be a waste being unable to use our great maps without any satellite signals. Would A-GPS help in such situation?

Bro alanchia67, the reason why nobody could provide an answer is because this is a marketing question that only Garmin can answer to you. This is a decision for Garmin to make on why they are sticking to conventional GPS vs AGPS. The term "Assisted" refers to how cellular network network resources are used to provide a more robust measurement when only two satellites are visible. As cellular service provider resources are used, this might entail the use of one of their SIMM cards into the GPS resulting in network cost being chargeable.

Suggest you pose this question to Garmin direct and see what they say

They had announced two new models GPSMAP 695 and GPSMAP 696, a new series of portable aviation navigation devices.......... but still no agps function ... http://www.gpsdaily.com/reports/Garmin_ ... r_999.html

IMHO it makes sense that GPS migration to the mobile phone will be more economical for end users as why buy a GPS unit when your cell phone, which you’ll probably have anyway, can do all the same navigational functions?

thanks for the reply.

i wonder, with no satellites, just cell phone network, would AGPS work in underground tunnels?

If your cellphone works in the tunnel, AGPS will work .... it is mentioned in my brief write-out that AGPS uses the cellular network to get satellite date ..

haha! :finga:

I told her tarmac is better but she insisted on grass patches... so bo bian i settle for something in between lor.
She's also been a little difficult lately and kept stalling when i'm getting it on. I tried opening her choke up to make it easier but still get the same problem. Though happens most when she's got a cold start, things get better once she warms up to my throttling skills when we're stationary. A fast ride after that helps too!

Btw, i also screwed that side-view mirror tight just last week after it became loose from too much... adjusting and probably also the occasional wack from someone's butt while squeezing past.
