#21 Post by generaluser777 » Thu Oct 16, 2008 4:39 am

Need advice from expert for Garmin Portable GPS that can be used in car.

1) Do I need to pay any onetime or recurring/monthly charge to access the GPS?

2) Any recommended model can meet below criteria.
-- full feature of navigation and maps
-- basic model enought (no need mp3 and etc)
-- able to use map downloaded from this web site

3) all Garmin portable GPS able to play voice to inform on the driving direction right?

4) Saw they are lot Nuvi model in Garmin web site, all can be used with maps downloaded from this web site?

5) Understand for some model, all the maps downloaded from here can be copied to SD card and slot in to Garmin And some model need to install the maps direct to the Garmin GPS? Is this correct? If yes, which option is better?

6) Can share with me any buying tips also? Thanks.

7) Any recommeded shop?

As what SB advised, please read the Wiki.

But the short answers to your questions are:-

1. No
2. Nuvi 205
3. Yes
4. Yes
5. Not correct. All Nuvis can.
6. No tips but read the various posts to see the pros and cons of each model
7. No recommendation but read the thread "List of Garmin Dealers in Singapore"

Garmin 200 already phased out by Garmin ... this model replaced by 205 series ... 200 model is good basic model to start off with ... buy according to affordability

As a newbie please read our wiki section "newbie pitstop" to get started with GPS followed by "general references ".

Can I know which Nuvi version can do tracking?
I am now having a Nuvi 200, I understand that if I change the firmware to version 3.40 I can have it, but the question is that I do have my USA map in it. What will happen to the US map once I upgrade the firmware? please help. Found out there are some new road in a new hosing area that which I can contribute.
Note. Currently I do have MSM and USA map in my Nuvi 200.

Quick question,

a friend of mine bought a nuvi 760 in australia. He was a bit confused that the Mapsource CD was not bundle with the nuvi. He used to own a handheld GPS (forgot which model) that comes with the mapsource CD. Sadly CD gone case  .

anyway i was just wondering is the nuvi 760 bought in malaysia / singapore comes with the CD? If it doesnt, know where can the CD be bought?

Although he can just buy the CD while he's in aussie, but if can be bought in malaysia with a cheaper price, he wont mind lol.

Thanks in advance for the help :)

Hi Bro amdteng
I bought my 760 form the States and did not come with CD either. After reading from this forum i learned to download Mapsource from the Garmin website and install it in my 760s. Do not know what else in the CD but if it just for Mapsource it is available FOC from the website.

There is a thread about the latest version of Mapsource and a link to download it.

Hope this is of help to your friend and you :)
