Tracking With The Nuvi 200

#1 Post by Edwin » Sun Oct 21, 2007 10:33 pm

For those interested to use this feature, you will need to first upgrade the firmware to 3.40.
First of all, this feature can only be accessed via a hidden menu and to access this menu,
do the following:

1. Click on Browse to open the Nuvi maps in browse mode, then click on the left bottom speed button. (see pic 01)
2. When you see the speedometer screen (Pic 02), press and hold the top left corner of the screen (for about 10 sec) until you see the next screen (see pic 03).
3. You may see a pop-up window over the screen (Pic 04). Just click anywhere to remove this window (Pic 05).
4. Then click on the Next button to access the next menu, i.e. the option to Start Recording (Pic 06). Although you may see another button to Start Playback (this currently is not advisable to use as it can cause the device to crash and reboot).
5. When you are navigating or browsing along, and tracking is on, you will also see a Stop button on the top of the screen and pressing this will cause the tracking to stop.
6. To access the tracks, you cannot replay these as it can cause the system to crash. However to get around this, you need to connect to your PC. Open the main Garmin folder and you will find a new folder called Logs. Open this folder and you will find a folder with the date and time stamped on the date you first started tracking. Open this folder and you will find two files, i.e. gps.bin and nav.bin.
7. Copy these files into your PC then use the Nutrak utility (found: http://www.anpo.republika.pl/files/nutrak005.zip)
8. Install the above utility and copy your gps.bin and nav.bin files into the root folder of the utility. Use this to convert the bin.gps file into *.gpx which is compatible with Mapsource or Google Earth and you can then view your tracks.
See exmaple of how a typical track by the Nuvi can produce once you convert the gps.bin to a .gpx file (pic).

Hope the above brief instruction on a separate topic would be helpful for those users who want to try out this feature in your Nuvi 200.

Enjoy tracking and do contribute to this forum.

Noted earlier discussion on this Nuvi 200 tracking feature in these threads ...
* viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2397 "Nuvi 2xx Firmware 3.40 released" on 15oct07 neothematrix found the following GPSPassion thread.
* http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topi ... C_ID=98909 "Nuvi 2xx 3.40 firmware adds Track log feature !" on 12oct07

This makes me look at Nuvi 200 with much more interest!

Good technical notes, workable and simple.

Another feature with this firmware, try press >10 sec on the
batt. indicator, it will direct to hidden data, configuration
and test setup, check color display, dead pixel.. etc.

The only set back now, I wish in the future the is a function
to check GPS signal, tracking, PDOP, etc.. like 200W did.

Did you read my notes no. 6, where I mentioned that you cannot playback the track as it causes the system to crash and reboot. The only way to playback or review your tracks is after converting the files to .gpx files and review these in Mapsource or Google Earth if you dont have the formmer.

Bro, Edwin, useful post you have here. However, to prevent ppl from missing some points about refraining from playback otherwise the system will crash, I suggest you color and bold these sentences. It would also be nice if u add a disclaimer otherwise some ppl may blame u later on if they did not follow the steps and ended up with corrupted system or their system crashed.

Bro Redstorm.

I know the notes are currently also found elsewhere, just thought I'd summarise a bit and put some brief notes on this forum to help anyone interested. I thought mine notes were clear and brief enough..

Anyway, it's best ppl learn things from their own experience. These are mere references.
