The Nuvi 205W

#1 Post by udaloy » Mon Jul 14, 2008 11:57 pm

Here is my write up on the Nuvi 205W, and how it measures against the Nuvi 200W.

Physical Dimension, the 205W shares the same form factor as the 200W.

Upon booting up, here are the screens.

The 205W boots up faster, and acquires it's first fix earlier than the 200W in all conditions.

A useful feature missing in the 200W is the map scale.
The 205W has a map scale on the bottom left corner of the screen.
Image

The 205W has trip log function which is not available on the 200W

Other than that, the 205W is similar in functions with the 200W. Here are some differences in the graphic user interface.

Looks like the 205W interface very very close to Nuvi 760,
And it is good to have Track Log & Key Board Selection.

Here are more differences between the 205W, and 200W.

There are two options in the 205W,

The "ABCDE' Layout,

or

Qwerty Layout
Image

The 205W (US version) comes with 2Gb of internal memory, that's double the capacity of the 200W (US version)

Another new feature is the "Where Am I" function

The 205W I have come in graphite finishing.

The strange thing is that in US, the 205W is cheaper than 200W.

I don't think so, Garmin is not that kind. The most we can get may be 4 sec, ( like GMXT & Nuvi760)?

You did not show the most significant change in the display interface i.e. the navigation screen. What about the new 3D basemap?

As regards faster fix, this is probably due to the new chip (ST or MTK with HotFix, instead of SiRFIII). Are you able to check the chip type at the firmware page?

In terms of memory, I believe the old US 200W has 1.5GB and not 1GB.

I went through the pages in the diagnostic mode and I can't find the chip-type for the 205W. In the page where this information can be found on the 200W, on the 205W, that line of information is missing.

The navigation screen information between the 200W, and 205W are essentially the same, but only presented differently with the exception of an additional speedo function on the 205W.

The 205W provides additional information in the form of Route Info.
Image

The 200W uses the top bar for all their information display whereas the 205W adopts the pop-up window for other information such as Red Light Camera Alert. The top bar on the 205W is solely use for navigation.
Image

Another example on the pop-up window, this is for Speed Limit

There are pros and cons in both display formats.
