If you driving around Japan road then just use their car ready GPS navigational system, however I don't know they can switch it to English. I travel with my friend car in japan, and all is in Japanese and their map is up to date with warning of traffic jam road.

their free paper map is also updated if you planning to go around interesting place using train.

Sorry if this is too late - Too much H Kebgsn late partying!

Where will you land? Narita maybe can get info. Ueno Keisei Line station Tourist info also maybe. In Tokyo (or elsewhere) find a bookstore like Kinokuniya that has English books and get a map book.

Kansai Airport sure bet. If you can wait until you get into Kobe, then Sannomiya Station Info will have maps for sure. Osaka Umeda station should have info but very confusing place.

Most important to remember, three parallel train lines and roads run along the coast facing south, west right, east left. Rokko mountains behind. Orient yourself accordingly, then all is easier.
