Cartajima (part 3 - FINAL)

A new day and I climb up the ladder to the rooftop terrace to survey the domain.
Image

It's cool, and serenely peaceful. I think every creature is still in bed, except the birds.
Image

Even Botz is still asleep as we gingerly let ourselves out of his house, whose only reminder the night before was to shut the door behind us, and not to worry about it being unlocked.
Image

And yes, we just have to test the only phone booth in town ... and it's working perfectly.
Image

Back to our car a hundred metres away, and fitting our bags into our trusty Ford Fiesta 1.4 Diesel is always a challenge. This puppy gives me 20km for every litre of diesel, which is fantastic!
Image

The craggy mountains beckon.
Image

In the distance, somebody builds his mansion in the middle of nowhere.
Image

As we drive along the narrow twisting road back to civilisation, we spot another white village.
Image

And beneath us in a valley, maggot-like sheep forage for food.
Image

The road ahead, and our next stop is the white town of Ronda.
Image

Grab cheap AirAsiaX tix KL-Stansted, then look for more cheap tix from Stansted to Andalucia, by RyanAir or easyJet. Once in Andalucia rent a car for 20euros/day, and look for hostels at 15-20euros/pax/night. Then start driving, diesel at 1euro/litre. Simple.

Gibraltar (part 2)

Once inside Gibraltar, the main road to the town centre passes impressive roundabouts ...
Image

... especially this one, to commemorate the forced World War II evacuation of civilians to UK, Madeira and Jamaica, by the British Govt. Only in 1951, the last batch of evacuees returned to their beloved homeland.
Image

A function at a roadside school shows the typical Gibraltarians - a mix of various immigrant races who came to the Rock over the last 300 years, especially Genoese, Catalans, Jews from Morocco, Maltese and Portuguese. But they are all now British subjects.
Image

At a town centre entrance, a monument to commemorate The Great War.
Image

Next to it, a memorial tablet. Gibraltar is a very historical spot.
Image

Up the steps and past the street, we come to the town square ...
Image

... with an interesting City Hall.
Image

Windows and balcony railings of City Hall.
Image

Kids loiter in front of the City Hall. Can't blame them, Gibraltar is a tiny 6.5 sq km territory, so where else to pass the time? There are 28,000 people here with no arable land. It's literally a piece of 'rock'.
Image

The square in front of the City Hall, with the Rock in the background.
Image

Past the square, the main street of downtown Gibraltar.
Image

British chows everywhere, such as here ...
Image

... and here, ...
Image

... which are to be paid in pounds, either Gibraltar Pound or UK Pound Sterling, both interchangeable one-to-one.
Image

There's also the familiar bobby.
Image

Intricate balcony railings which are typical here.
Image

An old business still runs strongly.
Image

An ancient chapel is squeezed between two buildings.
Image

Next to it, a proud regiment is on parade.

Thanks, we arrived Malaga 18 May, picked up a rental car (Ford Fiesta 1.4 Diesel). Did the Malaga-Ronda-Gibraltar-Arcos-Sevilla-Merida-Cordoba-Granada-Malaga circuit. Departed Malaga 24 May for Stansted. Covered 1600km in those 6 days. Ample time to visit key spots. Yes, my hands are burnt - I wore long-sleeve but hands on the steering wheel exposed.

I'm sorry to hear yr tangan kena bakar from the scorching temps at the wheel... my wife was wondering, did you not apply any hand cream? We hope your skin is gradually recovering by now. You had lots of driving done and we may not be covering that length like you did but hope equally well to see the coastal sights beween Malaga and Gibraltar. If you have a name or number of those places you managed to lodge at, I'll be happy to receive and refer them abt you passing it on if we select any or most to make a reservation too.
We'll probably pick up our Rental from Sevilla and drop it off at Gibraltar to fly back.
I shall PM you my email for you to share with me on those contacts there if you can and is willing to share kindly with us. :tq: Naim.

Thanks guys.

For my travels, I like these sites:
http://www.booking.com
http://www.hostelworld.com

Pls browse them for the best deals. With a rental car, you can stay in a (peaceful) place outside of urban areas. My criteria are: easy access from expressways or trunk roads, cheap rooms, free wi-fi, free parking, free breakfast (not too critical) & good reviews from previous users.

But pls PM me for the places I've stayed at recently.
