Nuvis can now navigate in tunnels with NT maps

#1 Post by BanBan » Mon Nov 01, 2010 12:18 pm

I was tipped about this feature by Adil recently. So yesterday, on the way back from Pahang, I was able to put this feature to test during the drive through Karak tunnel. It worked!. There were two things that confirmed it. There was no "Lost satellites reception" warning from Aussie Karen. The navigation just function normally. So what's the big deal. There might not be much impact through the Karak tunnel. Imagine you are going through the Smart Tunnel. If you get lost satellite reception status in Smart Tunnel, your navigation is suspended. Remember, in Smart Tunnel there are junctions to go, say, to Bukit Bintang area or to Jalan Tun Razak if you are from Sungai Besi. With suspended navigation, your Nuvi can't help. So with newer Nuvis now, they will still tell you the turn to take inside tunnels. Cool?

This is possible now as we can mark the entrance and exit of a tunnel as special features. Nuvis will now apply dead reckoning when it is aware that it is entering a tunnel. Dead reckoning is the projecting of positions based of last known speed and direction. With that there is no break in navigation service.

I also noticed this about two weeks back while travelling on the entire stretch of KPE....but refrained from posting for further testing...

Than my Nuvi play punk and refused to shake hand with PC so I cannot extract the screenshots.

At that time I was using the CN map....and yeah..I was past the point where you are expecting to hear "Lost Satellite Connection"....didn't happen....the pointer was moving and the display of the next exit and it distance are moving.

Conspiracy theory came to my mind.....scary thought....garmen can now track you in tunnel and charged you for the road tax..... :ko:

On my way back, I changed to Gamin complied MSM map....but this one lost satellite connection...by the usual distance...

So was waiting to extract the sceenshots in order to ask if our MSM map can be make dead-reckoning ready...

By the way, the test cost me an earful from she-who-must-be-obeyed for going the loooonnnnnng way :ko:

I think I used both maps to test the "tunnel conspiracy" ... MSM NT and Garmin NT ... :-k

We haven't start marking the tunnel in Singpaore map. Once this is updated, you should be able to test this feature.

Bro Ace, were you using Nuvi255W when you experienced the dead-reckoning-like feature?

Bro Wsian, can you confirm this feature works with older Nuvis as well?

How about those maps compiled by Garmin? Like MSM NT 2010.20 or CN SG/MY 2010.30.

I think bro SilverBeauty is currently using those maps. :-k
