Where to keep GPS unit?

#1 Post by Redzsky » Mon Mar 15, 2010 5:11 pm

Hi all,

I'm a noob here who just bought a GPS set. My question is if I park daily under the hot sun, can I still keep the device in the car ? Not on the cradle of course, but somewhere in the dashboard drawer. I'm worried the high temperature will fail the electronics.

Mods - pls help me move if post in wrong section :))

Sorry for digging up the old posts.
Did a google search..but no luck with the answer...plus the link is death too.
Same situation with the TS...
So it is ok to keep the set in the hot car?
Maybe the TS can let me know his experience

In reality, it is best to take your Nuvi with you when you leave your car. You are more likely loose the unit to theft than it get thermal issues.

Though the unit is rated up to 0-60 degree C ( listed in owners manual ), here in Malaysia / Singapore it can reach or exceed the maximum operating temperature inside the car compartment when parked in the blazing hot sun for a period of time.

If you really want to leave it in car, avoid leaving it from direct sun light. Get one of those thermal insulation sleeve will help protect it.

If you have only 1 GPS, it is not so difficult to keep it in your pocket when you leave your car to avoid theft more particularly damage done to your car in the process of stealing your GPS.

If like me, you have several, then it is not feasible to put a few units in your pocket. I leave mine in the car but not in the cradle so it will not be visible.

If you wish to keep it in the car and if your car is left in the sun, find the coolest part of your car to keep it in to keep it bearing in mind hot air rises so logically the door pockets will be the coolest part.

Bro Jasonlee, I really admired your commitment to help all members, including answering a post that is 685 days old as of today.

But of course, the question is still applicable today as when it is first posted. Even more so as the Earth get more warm up compared to 685 days ago. :(
