#1 Post by wanmad » Fri Mar 16, 2012 1:06 pm

- Foto Reuters

Penang juga.

If the story is true, then I can understand as I have driven extensively in Japan using their Navi.

The Japanese culture accepts that the GPS gives them commands to obey without question but the American GPSes are designed to let the users have a choice. Therein lies the problem. How can the blind make the right choices?

Looks like have to make it a point to advise people not to just follow gps like idiots. If the gps points you to drive into a river don't lose your common sense la... An honest mistake could have been done during mapping. We can just laugh at it in retrospect but this sort of thing have happened before and will happen again. I just hope that no injury or loss of life will ever result. That is why Garmin and Malsingmaps have disclaimer clauses. Maybe have to include the statement "Whatever it is, don't you ever ever lose your common sense!".

The three musketeers are 'pelajar' ya?? Apa dah jadi pada 'pelajar' zaman sekarang?? Looks like the school education got to include how to read and follow GPS 'dos' and 'don'ts'. Otherwise, like this lah ](*,)

Low tide masa tu. Sounds reasonable if you read the whole article.

Even we connect ferry lines to our road polylines. Maybe we should disconnect?

GPS is not perfect or word of the "supreme one". Common sense should kick in somewhere :-'

Yes, the GPS is not perfect but in fact dumb like computers. They follow the RIRO principle.

If the mapper who did the map, restricted the road correctly, this accident would not have happened. Our mapping software allows the mappers to customise the road in this manner:
Routing Tab.JPG
Unfortunately this is hardly used even in our map because contributors do not supply the info.

If the mapper had checked No Car/Motorcycle, then the car would not have been routed to that road. Sadly, we can't use this much in Malaysia because many of our roads that are not passable to cars are OK for motorcycles and the mapping software does not separate the two.
