Garmin EDGE newer models - 605 and 705

#1 Post by turbosnail » Thu Aug 30, 2007 1:00 pm

someone triggered me about these newer models. I don't know if it has been mentioned in old MSM before.

In short, I think they are more for road riding.

Hopefully the newer models contain improvements over the old Edge. The Edge, although having the benefit of Sirf chipsets, are nowhere near the sensitivity of handhelds such as the CSx.

Conjectural alert but a friend of mine told me he put side by side up against the windscreen of a van travelling in the boondocks of Perak, the CS never lost signal ever. The 305 had intermittent breaks in reception.

I have the Forerunner and i would say the same on reception quality. Its great out in the open, but cycling under foliage and tree cover means really patchy reception. Nowhere near as good as the CSx.

Your observation proves my sceptism about its use in mountain biking. I still think it's more suitable for road riding. Also, not using off the shelf batteries makes me having a second thought about getting one myself.

My 305 finally kicked the bucket in late October last year. Had a quick google round and found that the unit has been known to be problematic re:battery. There were many fixes on the net, including fixes provided by Garmin themselves - believe it or not - Garmin tells you just to press buttons together and in the right sequence. I personally know a few other who has problems with their units - with varying degrees of malfunction. So from this little sampling, i'd guess that QA and QC for this unit is

The buttons combo did not work for mine so i had it sent back to Taiwan - though it was out of the warranty period. In my case it was a motherboard malfunction and not worth fixing. Now it sits at home and displayed as a Kiasu-Looking-Watch which invariably gets ppl asking WTF it is.

I will get the 405 - stocks coming in after CNY. It lost some of the functions of the 305 but looks better and hopefully has better product QA QC in place.

Garmin Edge 705

#8 Post by jeffreyliam » Tue May 06, 2008 10:54 pm

Hi,

Contemplating 60Csx but I ride MTB and found out about the Edge 705. Anyone know if this model is good. What about topo maps? Is the unit reliable off-roading?

Cheers,

Jeff

Hi, maybe next time around, you can do a search on your inquiry before posting. I have attached the thread here for your reading, viewtopic.php?p=8753#p8753.
