can install malsingmap on Montana 650

#1 Post by kryture » Wed Apr 22, 2015 7:58 am

I'm planning to buy the Montana 650 to use for driving (70%) and hiking (30%). I'm going to the AECO office this saturday to get me a unit. I was wondering wheter I can install the malsingmap on it? Do i need to buy additional optional items for it to work? I already know about the automount with speaker and going to purchase it. Thanks for the feedback.

Yes, Malsing maps can install in all Garmin products except those old units like GPS V (because file too big to fit in device without SD card)
There are no additional items you need to install MSM except mSD card. We always recommend you install MSM in ext SD card
and not disturb the main memory.

While Montana is great for driving, i am not sure if the bulkiness is suitable for hiking. If you have the budget, maybe you should go for Nuvi in car
and handheld for hiking. I have no idea how lasting is the battery in Montana but for my older units like HcX (20+ hrs), Oregon (14 hrs) and 60 (14hrs).
No point go hiking if your GPS last only a few hours battery life.

thanks for the reassurance. now I feel confident for the purchase. I am a lightweight hiker (+-30-60 mins).. so no problems about battery life

Have fun shopping and remember map installation is very easy. We have wiki to help you. Don't let others talk you into installing
free maps like ours for a fee

I typically hike for 90-120 minutes. It is not battery life I am concerned about but the sensitivity of the GPS under the canopy of trees.

I use a hand-held Etrex 30 and have activated the reception of both the US GPS satellites and the Russian Glonass satellites for greater accuracy.

Trust you will consider.

I used to track my journey with Holux bluetooth GPS + my Nokia symbian + ViewRanger app. Tracks a bit jumpy but still acceptable. Thank you for the tip! I think will be hapy with this Garmin.
