Uploading Malsingmaps into Garmin Streetpilot and Nuvi

  1. Go get a card reader and buy a suitable 512MB (or higher) memory card. [So far, the gmapsupp.img for all of Malaysia and Singapore has not exceeded 20MB. You may use the spare capacity to store secret MP3 files and/or speedtrap files later... ]
  2. Turn on your computer.
  3. Click this link -> gmapsupp.zip to bring you to the download directory. This directory contains OLDER and NOT-LOCKED gmapsupp.zip files. You should choose the one with the latest date of release. Each zip file has maps for all of West & East Malaysia, Singapore, Road POIs and Singapore HDB carpark entrance POIs.
    1. The above link contains the latest free combined EastWestMalaysia/Singapore maps (GM-Mysin version 2.15). You won't be lost with this as it has pretty good coverage of Malaysia and Singapore.
    2. Also, if you wish to get latest maps, you will need to contribute something before UNLOCK codes can be issued to you. (You need to read this and this to know how to contribute and unlock the locked-maps.)
  4. Download the zipped file into a folder of your choice on your computer.
  5. Unzip the file. You should see a file called gmapsupp.img
  6. Copy this file to your SD card as follows \garmin\gmapsupp.img ( This means you create a New Folder called Garmin in the root directory of your SD card, NOT anywhere else. )
  7. Put SD card into your GPS and turn it on.
  8. Road POI and SGP HDB BLK POI image files are in the above gmapsupp.zip files to assist you to find any road (in all of Malaysia and Singapore) or HDB block (applicable only in Singapore. Remember: Do not use "Address Search" button on your Streetpilot or Nuvi. Use "Spell Name" button to find a POI as you would do for any other POI.
  9. OK. Dont' ask so much now, ya ? Just listen to instructions and start enjoying your new toy.
    1. If you are not sitting in Malaysia/Singapore while you try to search for any of our POI (after loading the free June 07 map), it only mean that you have not read your respective GPS manual on how to 'SET CURRENT LOCATION' on your GPS unit to somewhere in Malaysia/Singapore.
    2. Some members arrive on our shores and switch on their GPS unit in their hotel room and find that they cannot spell search to any road in our country. Solution is simple. You need to bring your GPS unit out into an open area where you can see the sky. Your GPS unit must be stationary for a faster satellite fix. Switch on your GPS unit only at this point. Stand back and wait for at a few minutes. Your unit should re-initialize to the new satellites and be ready to use immediately.
  10. (Added: Dec 28 2007 for changes in the NEW LOCKED MAPS 2008 ) Please read this thread for instructions on the new procedure to download the Gold version and upload the All-in-one GMAPSUPP.IMG to your Nuvi. I am not sure whether this instruction is permanent as I believe it may change, but for the moment, just follow it.

ADDITIONAL FILES THAT YOU MAY WANT TO PUT INTO \GARMIN\POI FOLDER

  1. You can download the "speedtrap.gpi" file from here <--maintained by Carlover
  2. You can download the "ERPgantries.gpi" from here <-- maintained by Carlover
  3. If you want to be alerted at every traffic light junction (that has a camera), you may also download the additional "TrafficCam.gpi" from here <-- maintained by Carlover
  4. Download "AXS Station.gpi" and "SAM Station.gpi" from here <-- maintained by Edgarchen
  5. Download any other "whatever.gpi" from here
  6. In your SD card, you should see a folder named "Garmin". Create a sub-folder called "POI" inside the "GARMIN" folder. Place the "Speedtrap.gpi", "ERPgantries.gpi", "whatever.gpi" files into the "POI" folder.

Note:

  1. "Alert.gpi" was maintained by Surinder. This is practically similar to "speedtrap.gpi", but is less up to date because Surinder has problems with his pc. If you choose to use this "SpeedTrap.gpi" file, then please do not not load the "Alert.gpi" file into the same "POI" folder. Otherwise, you will hear 2 voice alerts at most speed trap locations. These 2 files are similar and does the same job. Just that they are maintained by 2 distinctly happy persons.
  2. The full Wiki article of Surinder's and Carlover's work are here and here respectively.

Using Malsingmaps on Garmin Streetpilot and Nuvi

  1. DO NOT USE "Address Search" button on your touchscreen to search to a address.
  2. Use "Spell Name" button on your touch-screen to spell a road name.
  3. For example: Spell "Blangah" instead of "Telok Blangah Heights"; "Besar" instead of "Jalan Besar"; "Kadut" instead of "Sungei Kadut Loop"; This is because names are sometimes shortened to "Tl Blangah Hts" or "Jln Besar" or "Sg Kadut Loop" ...  :)
  4. If you want to search for a HDB Block, just use "Spell Name" button and spell "232" for eg. All the roads having Block number 232 will appear on your screen. Choose the appropriate one and you are on your way.....

If you want to narrow your search, put a space before and after your block number as in " 232 ". If you are looking for block 2A (for eg), key in " 2 " with a space before and after the digit 2. As the BLK POI project was painfully done by many contributors, some of us ignore the alphabets... :), but you will still get to the car park entrance of your desired block. Cheers.

I recently noticed that users of the StreetPilot C510, or the Nuvi 610/660 series have a different screen after they press "Where To?" button. For these users, please press any button on your second screen..

eg, Press "Food, Lodging" button and you will see the "Spell Name" button. Start keying in your road names here.....

Good luck

I can't make it any simpler than the above.... and hopefully you will be happy enough to come back here later, read the Wiki/FAQ section and minimize asking very very basic questions... Have a great day !!! Christmas sale is coming !!! --Jaguar

but, but, ... if you want to know the way on how it should be done, please read on

  • I suggest you slide a little switch on the side of the original SD card to 'lock' mode, and not load anything else on it.
  • Buy yourself extra SD cards (128K and above) to play if you want to download free maps from www.malsingmaps.com website.
  • What comes in the box are usually, the GPS unit, a suction cup for your windscreen, a usb to cigarette lighter charging cable, a manual and the preloaded SD card, and/or the relevant CD containing USA or Europe maps.
  • You do not have Mapsource software with this purchase.
  • You have only 1 choice to load free maps. Go to "Downloads -> Utilities" section and download this software "PatchIMG".
  • Next, go to "Downloads -> Mapset Installers for Mapsource" and click on "GM-Mysin Mapsource Installer".
  • This will automatically download 8 maps into a folder on your pc.
1. 06710022.img
2. 60000077.img
3. 60000078.img
4. 63008888.img
5. 63108888.img
6. 65008888.img
7. 66008888.img
8. 69008888.img

  • Activate PatchIMG software.
  • Click on "Getmap" button to select all the above 8 maps from your folder.
  • Please note that the maps are numbered for eg:60000077.img.
  • Load all the 8 xxxxxxx.img files via "Getmap" button except the "GM-Mysin_mdr.img" file and the "GM-Mysin.img" file
  • Then click "Patch" to thread all of them together.
  • Lastly, click "Send" to send directly to your SD card in your card reader or via USB cable to your GPS unit. Some people like to click the radio button "create gmapsupp.img" file and then manually copy this file to their SD card as follows: \garmin\gmapsupp.img (Note: gmapsupp.img will be created in the last folder that you retrieved the xxxxxxxx.img files)
  • Recently (sep 2006), I observed that the Nuvi 310 turns into a USB mass storage device the moment you connect it via USB cable to your pc. That means you can see this Nuvi 310 as a E: drive or F: drive (depending on your computer setup). You then copy the gmappsupp.img file to your Nuvi as \garmin\gmapsupp.img <-- note: have to be in this format. ( For Windows users who are not familiar with the \ nomenclature, it means that you have to go to the root directory in your SD card. Create a new folder and rename it as "Garmin". Then copy the "gmapsupp.img" file into this new "Garmin" folder in your SD card. Good luck. )

Aha.. but some newbies insist on loading everything via Mapsource... so here goes..

Recently, upon completion of the SGP HDB Blk POI project, I realized that more people wants to combine this 00001111.img file together with the RoadPOI image files as a mapset in Mapsource. They want to be able to load Malsing, SGBLKPOI, RoadPOI from their Mapsource. So, here are the steps to convert your 00001111.img image file using M3 utility for use in Mapsource. - Jaguar -

  1. Download the M3 utility from our download section. (say some silent prayers first...)
  2. Activate M3.
  3. In M3, you select your 00001111.img file from your folder. (file name must be in numeric !)
  4. Type in the info as follows (as M3 has strict conventions):
    1. Mapset name : SGBlkPOI
    2. Mapset description: "SGBlkPOI Mapset"
    3. Product Code : I choose "102" as I already used "101" for my RoadPOI
    4. Install folder: I chose "Auto"
    5. Mapset Option: please choose "normal"
  5. Then press the button Create Mapset. Wait a little while....(a little prayer might help.. if for any reason, you find that Mapsource crashes, you can come back to M3. Click on View Mapsets and uninstall the last installation you created earlier)

Now, activate Mapsource...

  1. Mapsource already contain the mapset "Malsing 3.xx"
  2. Select mapset "Malsing 3.xx". Select all your map tiles. All these map tiles should appear on your left panel.
  3. Now, select mapset "SGBlkPOI". Select whatever tiles you see on screen. This should also appear and add-on to the map tiles already on your left panel.
  4. Click on Send to device........ (Viola ! you got it !)

Repeat the above steps for all the 9 RoadPOI image files. You can load all 9 RoadPOI image files at one go OK ? Dont' go create each RoadPOI image to mapset one by one hor ! But please use a different Product Code and a different Mapset name & description OK ? hee hee.

Alternatively, you can also combine all the RoadPOI and HDB Blk POI image files in one loading and create a mapset called "RoadnBlk mapset" yah ? Nothing is stopping you to be creative....

For people with Nuvi and Streetpilots, do remember to click on Mapsourceroads.bat in your Malsing folder before you start Mapsource OK ? or else, after loading, you cannot see any working map on your Nuvi or SP. The MapsourceRoads.bat will disable custom icons as your units cannot accept them....

Good luck..... :muak: (huh ? no muak pic ? ) ... you have been jaguarised ...
